Interview with Soca Artist - Ms Desire (BIM) SVG Flag

soca Artist Written Interview

Q: When did you realise that you had a nack for singing?

A: I’ve been singing since I can remember so I guess since I can remember is when I realised I had a nack for singing!! I started to take lessons when I was 11 years old ,along with dance and drama lessons when I joined ‘The North London Performing Arts School’. However I Never initially started singing soca, I sang Gospel and R&B first and it was not until I was about 18 that I started singing soca.

Q: How do you come up with ideas for lyrics do you think in the studio or outside the studio?

A: How my lyrics come about is a weird but wonderful thing!! Sometimes when I hear the riddim I instantly get the concept of what I want the song to be about and the lyrics just come. However sometimes I could be at work and I would think of a great concept for a song, write the lyrics and the fit it around a riddim that I think would best suit the song. When I write my songs I always base them around a concept because I think its nice when a song tells a story. Like ‘Me and You’ for example, the song tells a story of a girl who is head over heels with her boyfriend.

Q: Where is the weirdest place that you come up with Song?

A: The weirdest place I have ever come up with a song is listening to the radio!! It was so weird because usually it is really hard to make a song whilst somebody is already singing, but I was listening to the matrix show and I totally blocked out the singing and a whole song came to my mind!! It was crazy… I can not even remember what song was playing at the time all I can remember is hearing the beat and then out came the lyrics for ‘Watch’ ; a song that will get realised sometime this summer.

Q: Can you Produce?
A: I grew up on Gospel and R&B so most of the songs or music I made is usually on the piano, and in that aspect I can. I have produced a lot of piano pieces for numerous songs, but when it comes to using programs like cubase, logic, fruity loop, I just can not get my head round it. I would need somebody to sit down and show me how to do it! The most I can do on cubase is record and play around with the vocals, but I am getting there slowly but surely. My focus is not really on the producing side though, because my thing is singing which is what I concentrate on.

Q: Have you written for anyone?

A: I have written a couple songs for people in all genres of music, I think that it is really important to be able to not only write songs for yourself but for others and for different types of music. To be able to write a song from someone else’s point of view and being able to pinpoint a totally new audience is practice on making a hit record that everyone can relate to!

Q: What songs will the public best know you for?

A: I would say either ‘Move (SocaChild remix)’ or ‘Me and You’…. Both very well produced songs, props to SocaChild on the production. Also props to Soca Johnny for ‘Move’ , not a lot of people know this but Soca Johnny wrote ‘Move’.

Q: who are your inspirations?

A: People who inspire me are those who are consistent with having great songs, and very successful in all aspect of the entertainment world. So I would have to say people like Whitney Houston, Beyonce, CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams, Alison Hinds, Edwin Yearwood. Yeah I know people from all different genres but I listen to and appreciate all types of music.

Q: What is your favourite tune that you have done?

A: I would say ‘Me and You’ is the favourite tune I have done so far! This was my third song I recorded and I had a lot of fun doing it. It was funny how this song came about because I wrote the whole song from a 16 bar snippet that SocaChild had up on his myspace. When I heard the riddim I was like I HAVE TO GET ON IT!!! I also think I enjoyed that song because it was more singing, kinda like a soca ballad; a chance to show people that I can actually sing and not just shout in tune!

Q: How many tunes do you plan to releasing this year?.

A: This year I am planning to bring out 4 tunes for Crop Over 2k9, two chipping songs and two jump up songs!

Q: Who would you like to work with firstly in your own Island, then other Island and why?

A: From the UK scene I would love to work with either Chardanai or Soca Johnny, I know them both very well and it is something that has already been discussed its just finding the time to do it. They both are very good at what they do. Chardanai is able to come up with amazing structures and harmonies and I Love the way Soca Johnny can ride any riddim. So definitely one of them or both, I would say scrappy but we already got something on the way… I will say no more about that!!
Other Islands…. I would love to do a song with the Queen of Soca Alison Hinds!! I Love all her songs, they are creative and have a fresh sound that you never get bored of! Also I would like to do a song with Patrice Roberts because I Love her groovy Soca style. I personally Love groovy Soca and would listen to it all day everyday so I think the two of us on a track would be crazy!

Q: What can people expect from you in the future?

A: The Future…. Just watch this space!!! I have got so many plans and projects that I will be doing from now till next year. They involve soca, reggae and R&B, so people can expect something Unique coming from Ms Desire!!

Q: What does soca mean to you or how would you explain what so is to someone who had no clue of what it was.
A: I would explain soca as ‘The Voice of the Caribbean’ it is a unique type of music that instantly makes you forget all your problems and feel good!!
